The Ridge Runner: A Lightweight Pannier Designed for Pack Burro Racing and Beyond
Sometimes the best equipment comes from recognizing that you don't need more gear. You need the right gear.
When I designed the Ridge Runner Panniers, I had a very specific group of people in mind: pack burro racers.
If you've ever attended a pack burro race, you know these aren't your typical pack trips. Competitors run alongside their donkeys, sometimes covering considerable distances over challenging mountain terrain. The relationship between runner and burro is something special, and the equipment they use needs to complement that partnership.
Traditional panniers are designed to carry substantial loads, which is exactly what you want when packing into the backcountry. But when you're running alongside your donkey, carrying a heavy load isn't the objective.
You want to carry what you need and leave everything else behind.
That was the thinking behind the Ridge Runner.
Designed with a Purpose
My goal was to create a simple, lightweight pannier that could carry water and a few essential supplies without adding unnecessary bulk or weight.
I started with the basics.
Water is an important consideration when you're covering miles on foot, so I designed each pannier to accommodate a standard 32-ounce Nalgene bottle. With a bottle on each side, you have the ability to carry 64 ounces of water without needing a large pack.
But water alone isn't always enough.
Whether you're participating in a race or heading into the mountains for an afternoon, there are a few things worth having along. Snacks, a small first-aid kit, and lightweight rain gear are good examples.
So I incorporated additional storage pouches into the design, giving users enough room for those essentials without turning the Ridge Runner into something bigger and heavier than necessary.
The result is a pair of panniers weighing just 24 ounces empty.
Keeping the Donkey in Mind
Whenever I design equipment at Mountain Ridge Gear, one of my primary considerations is how that equipment interacts with the animal.
Donkeys are remarkable athletes, and anyone who has spent time around them knows how capable they are. But even lightweight equipment needs to be thoughtfully designed.
The Ridge Runner features a flat backing panel with 1/8-inch foam padding between the contents of the pannier and the donkey's body.
This provides a layer of cushioning and helps separate the animal from the items being carried.
The design also incorporates an attachment tab to help secure the pannier and keep the equipment in place during movement.
It's a straightforward approach, but that's intentional.
My goal wasn't to create a complicated piece of equipment. It was to create something functional, lightweight, and practical for the activity.
Not Just for Racers
Although I originally developed the Ridge Runner specifically for the pack burro racing community, I quickly recognized that its usefulness extended well beyond competition.
Not everyone who enjoys hiking with a donkey wants to race.
In fact, plenty of people simply enjoy getting outside with their animals, exploring trails, spending time in the mountains, and sharing an experience with a four-legged companion.
And not every outing requires a full-size pack saddle and traditional panniers.
Sometimes you're only going a few miles. Perhaps you're heading out for an afternoon hike, taking your donkey on a training walk, or enjoying a leisurely outing on a familiar trail.
You don't need to pack for a weeklong expedition.
You just need water, a few snacks, some basic supplies, and perhaps a rain jacket in case the weather changes.
That's where the Ridge Runner really shines.
It provides a lightweight, minimalist alternative for donkey owners who want to bring along a few essentials without carrying more equipment than the outing requires.
A Different Approach to Packing
At Mountain Ridge Gear, we manufacture equipment for a wide variety of packing applications, from traditional backcountry expeditions to recreational outings with miniature donkeys.
One thing I've learned over the years is that there isn't a single piece of equipment that's ideal for every situation.
A pannier designed to haul camping gear deep into the wilderness serves a very different purpose than one designed for a person running alongside a donkey.
Neither is necessarily better. They're simply designed for different jobs.
The Ridge Runner represents the lighter end of that spectrum.
It's not intended to replace a full-size pannier system when substantial carrying capacity is needed. Instead, it gives donkey owners another option when the goal is to travel light.
And sometimes, traveling light makes the entire experience more enjoyable.
Simple. Lightweight. Purpose-Built.
I've always appreciated equipment that does exactly what it's supposed to do without unnecessary complications.
That's the philosophy behind the Ridge Runner.
It began as a solution for pack burro racers who needed a practical way to carry water and essential supplies. But it has also become an excellent option for recreational hikers who want to enjoy the outdoors with their donkeys.
Whether you're competing in a mountain race or simply taking your long-eared friend out for an afternoon adventure, the Ridge Runner is designed to help you carry the essentials while keeping things simple.
Because sometimes the best adventures aren't about how much gear you can carry.
They're about how far you can go, what you experience along the way, and the animal sharing the trail with you.
