Built for a Purpose. Proven by Nearly Two Decades of Adventure.

The story behind Mountain Ridge Gear's American-made duffel bags.

In 2009, while I was still serving in the United States Air Force, I designed a duffel bag for my own personal use. I wasn't trying to reinvent the wheel. I simply wanted a bag that was uncomplicated, functional, and, above all else, tough. Something that could withstand years of hard use without falling apart.

Nearly two decades later, I still have that original bag. In fact, I still use it.

That first design eventually became what we now call our Small Duffel Bag. Its primary job these days is carrying steel tent stakes, which, as you might imagine, aren't particularly forgiving on fabric.

For approximately 18 years, that bag accompanied me on Boy Scout campouts at least once a month. It has also been tossed into the bottom of a pannier on countless backcountry pack trips, often buried beneath other gear and subjected to the bumps, jolts, and abuse that come with traveling by mule or donkey.

And here's the part that still amazes me.

After all those years, all those miles, and all those steel tent stakes, that original duffel bag doesn't have a single hole in it.

I couldn't have asked for a better testament to the design.

From One Bag to Destinations Around the World

What began as a simple project for my own use eventually became one of Mountain Ridge Gear's most successful and versatile products.

Over the years, we've manufactured and sold thousands of these duffel bags, including hundreds produced for the United States military and several other federal agencies. For several years, we also manufactured them exclusively for another well-known outdoor company, which sold them under its own brand.

Our duffels have traveled all over the world, serving people in environments and occupations I never could have imagined when I sat down to design that first bag.

And while I'm proud of their military heritage, what I find especially rewarding is the extraordinary variety of people who have discovered them.

One Design. Countless Uses.

Of all the products we manufacture at Mountain Ridge Gear, none crosses as many different markets as our duffel bags.

We've sold them to outdoorsmen, hunters, campers, craftsmen, electricians, tradespeople, and travelers. Some customers use them to organize tools and equipment. Others pack clothing, camping supplies, hunting gear, or whatever else their adventures demand.

But their uses go far beyond work and recreation.

Over the years, our duffel bags have been purchased as Christmas gifts, awarded as door prizes, donated for fundraisers, and distributed as promotional bags at major conventions. They've been given to graduating college students preparing to head overseas, offering them something practical and durable to take along on the next chapter of their lives.

One of my favorite examples happens every year in Las Vegas at the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation's Hunter & Outdoor Christmas show.

We frequently encounter shoppers who've been a little too enthusiastic with their purchases. They've accumulated more merchandise than they can comfortably carry, and suddenly they're faced with the challenge of getting everything home on an airplane.

Our duffel bags become the perfect solution. What started as a shopping dilemma turns into another opportunity for one of our bags to hit the road.

I get a kick out of that. A bag originally designed for my own military and outdoor use has become a trusted companion for everything from backcountry adventures to convention shopping sprees.

Simplicity Is a Design Feature

I've always believed that good equipment doesn't need to be complicated.

When I designed that first duffel, my priorities were straightforward: durability, functionality, and simplicity. I wanted something that would do its job, day after day, without unnecessary features getting in the way.

That philosophy continues to guide how we develop products at Mountain Ridge Gear.

We don't design equipment to look tough. We design it to be tough.

There's a difference.

The original duffel carrying my steel tent stakes is a reminder of that distinction. It's not sitting on a shelf as a keepsake. It's still doing exactly what I designed it to do in 2009.

American Made. Built to Last.

Every Mountain Ridge Gear duffel bag is manufactured right here in Colorado using American-made materials. We're proud of that commitment, and we're equally proud of the people whose craftsmanship goes into every bag.

When you purchase one of our duffels, you're getting more than a convenient way to carry your belongings. You're getting a product backed by years of real-world experience, a design that has served military personnel and outdoor enthusiasts around the world, and a company that believes quality should never be an afterthought.

I never imagined that the little bag I designed for myself back in 2009 would find its way into so many different hands, occupations, and corners of the world.

But perhaps that's what happens when you build something simple, build it right, and build it to last.

Nearly two decades later, that original bag is still going strong. And we're still making them right here in Colorado.
